A ride with a female Uber driver. Meet Angela Nabukalu

It is a rarity coming across a female Uber driver but once in a while chance lands on you, a woman takes the lad in the driver’s seat while you take any of the passenger’s seat. Majority of drivers on the platform are male so it feels unusual yet exciting to have an Uber driver who is female. We once had a chat with Uber’s very first female driver and it was as exciting.

    Techjaja: Who is Angela Nabukalu?

Angela is a single mother of 3 kids. A lovely daughter and 2 sons.

Techjaja: Single! How are you able to fend for the 3 said kids

It is one of the reasons I love driving for Uber. It helps me juggle between my transport business and taking care of my kids.

Techjaja: It is so rare to find female Uber drivers in Uganda. How have you been able to cope with a male dominated industry?

Majority of the men have a view that this line of work is for males but here I am.

Techjaja: How do these men perceive you given you’re challenging the status quo?

Men are often shocked to see me picking them and many admit that it is the first time being picked up by a female Uber driver. Some think its weird that I am driver because they perceive it as a mans job.

I often receive tips from male customers because most of them are amazed that I am driving them.

Techjaja: For how long have you been an Uber driver

I have been on the Uber platform for over a year now.

Techjaja: What is so special about driving for Uber

I like the fact that I get to meet new people everyday and also get an opportunity to earn and take care of my 3 kids.

Techjaja: Any challenges so far in this job and advice for fellow women?

I would encourage more women to join Uber. They will meet new people and get new business ideas everyday.
