This addition is here to revolutionize how we interact with voice messages, making it easier and more convenient than ever to stay connected.

What are WhatsApp voice message transcripts?

WhatsApp has long been a favorite messaging app for millions around the globe, and with the introduction of voice message transcripts, it’s raising the bar even higher. This feature allows users to convert voice messages into text, providing an alternative way to engage with audio content.

Whether you’re in a noisy environment, at work, or simply prefer reading over listening, this feature has got you covered.

    How do they work?

One of the standout aspects of WhatsApp’s voice message transcripts is that all processing happens on your device. This means that your voice messages—and their transcriptions—remain private and secure. No data is sent to external servers for processing, which is a significant win for user privacy.

To start using this feature, you’ll need to enable it in your app settings:

    • Open WhatsApp
    • Tap on the three dots (for Android) or go to the bottom right corner (for iOS) to access settings.
    • Find the Chats section.
    • Enable Voice Message Transcripts

Once activated, you’re ready to transcribe voice messages!

    Transcribing messages

When you receive a voice message that you’d like to read instead of listen to, simply long-press on the message and tap on the Transcribe option that appears. In moments, you’ll have a text version of the audio right at your fingertips.

WhatsApp understands that its user base is diverse and global. The voice message transcript feature supports multiple languages.

For Android, it’s English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Hindi. On iOS, users can access more transcripts in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, and more.

Why you’ll love WhatsApp voice message transcripts

Imagine being in a crowded café or commuting on public transport when a friend sends you a voice note. Instead of straining to hear or missing out entirely, you can quickly read what they said without needing headphones or disturbing those around you.

For individuals who are hard of hearing or prefer reading over listening due to personal preference or environmental factors, this feature opens up new avenues for communication. It makes WhatsApp more inclusive and user-friendly for everyone.

    Limitations to consider

While this feature is undoubtedly exciting, it’s important to be aware of its limitations.

The quality of transcriptions can vary based on factors like background noise or unclear speech. If there’s too much ambient sound or if someone speaks too quickly or softly, the transcript may not be perfect.

If you encounter a “Transcript unavailable” error, it could be due to mismatched language settings or other technical issues. Ensuring that your app settings align with the language used in the voice message can help mitigate this problem.
