Uganda’s Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja officially flagged off five Ugandan participants heading to Shenzhen, China, for the 2024 Huawei Leadership, Employability, Advancement Possibility (LEAP) digital talent training.

This initiative is part of Huawei’s ongoing commitment to enhancing technological skills in Uganda, a mission that has been active since the program’s inception in 2016.

During the flag-off ceremony, Prime Minister Nabbanja underscored the importance of this opportunity for the participants.

“Take advantage of the opportunity to represent Uganda with the highest levels of patriotism, emerge victorious and contribute positively to the labor force,” she urged.

Her gratitude extended to Huawei Technologies Uganda for their dedication to fostering technological advancement in the country: “Thank you, Huawei Technologies Uganda, for this initiative and your commitment to the technological advancement of Uganda over the years.”

The LEAP program stands out as Huawei’s flagship corporate social responsibility initiative, having trained a total of 50 Ugandans through physical sessions in China and an additional 162 participants who engaged virtually.

Mr. Ssali Gao, Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co. Limited, highlighted that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is now a critical growth engine across various industries. He emphasized Huawei’s role in promoting ICT development in Uganda and its commitment to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry skills.

As the ICT sector evolves rapidly, there is a pressing need for skilled professionals who can navigate its challenges. The LEAP program aims to address this need by offering comprehensive training in key areas:

Technology and Innovation: Participants will delve into both basic and advanced concepts surrounding pivotal technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. They will engage with experts who will share insights on topics ranging from cybersecurity to smart city developments.

Discovering Huawei: This segment provides a unique opportunity to learn about Huawei’s rich history and technological advancements through corporate presentations and virtual tours of their campus and flagship stores.

Leadership & Career Development: Participants will explore essential habits of successful individuals, strategies for thriving in cross-cultural environments, and models of strategic leadership.

Traditional and Modern China: Cultural immersion is a key feature of this program, with access to Chinese documentaries and virtual tours that allow participants to experience China’s scenic beauty at their own pace.

Huawei’s initiatives are not just about skill acquisition; they are about empowering individuals to thrive in a digitally transformed world. As Mr. Gao pointed out, “Talent development is crucial for the growth of any industry.”

With the rapid changes in business models and customer demands driven by technology, programs like LEAP are essential for equipping individuals with the necessary skills.

The five Ugandan participants will join peers from around the globe in this transformative journey. As they embark on this adventure, they carry not only their personal aspirations but also the hopes of a nation eager to advance its position in the global digital economy.
