WhatsApp is changing how you add, manage, and save contacts

WhatsApp is undergoing a transformation in how it manages contacts, introducing features that enhance user convenience and privacy. This update not only simplifies the process of adding and managing contacts but also incorporates advanced security measures to protect users’ data.

Historically, WhatsApp restricted contact management to mobile devices, requiring users to manually enter phone numbers or scan QR codes. The latest update allows users to add and manage contacts directly from WhatsApp Web and Windows applications, making it easier for those who prefer using a keyboard for input.

This change aims to streamline the user experience across multiple platforms, particularly for individuals who frequently switch between devices.

    WhatsApp-exclusive contacts

One of the standout features of this update is the ability to save contacts exclusively within WhatsApp. This option is particularly beneficial for users who share their devices or manage multiple accounts—such as personal and business accounts—on a single phone.

Contacts saved in this manner are automatically restored if a user loses their phone or switches devices. This feature not only enhances usability but also adds a layer of privacy by allowing users to keep their WhatsApp contacts separate from their general phone contact list.

    Future username system

WhatsApp has announced plans to implement a username-based system in the future, which will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers.

This feature aims to further enhance privacy and security, making it easier for users to communicate without exposing personal information. The groundwork laid by the current updates will facilitate this transition, allowing for a more flexible communication model.

    The technology behind the update

At the core of these enhancements is a novel encrypted storage system known as Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS). IPLS enables users to store contact names securely and retrieve them easily across different devices.

The system employs strong encryption keys generated on the client device, ensuring that only the user can access their contact information. This approach mitigates the risk of unauthorized access while providing seamless recovery options in case of device loss.

Key transparency and security measures with WhatsApp contacts

WhatsApp’s IPLS leverages existing technologies such as key transparency and hardware security modules (HSM). Key transparency allows users to verify that their phone number is tied to a specific identity key, increasing trust in the contact management process.

Additionally, HSMs ensure that data processing remains private and tamper-resistant, even from WhatsApp insiders.

To bolster security further, WhatsApp has partnered with Cloudflare for independent third-party auditing of its cryptographic properties. This collaboration aims to provide an additional layer of assurance regarding the integrity and safety of users’ contact information.

    Implications for users

These updates are set to significantly improve the user experience on WhatsApp. By allowing contact management across multiple devices and introducing WhatsApp-exclusive contacts, users can expect greater flexibility and control over their communication preferences.

The ability to manage contacts without relying solely on mobile devices will be particularly advantageous for professionals who use WhatsApp for business purposes.

    Future expectations

Looking ahead, WhatsApp users can anticipate more privacy-focused features as the platform continues to evolve. The introduction of usernames will likely be accompanied by additional enhancements aimed at protecting user data while facilitating easier connections between individuals.

As these updates roll out gradually over the coming weeks, users should stay informed about new functionalities that may enhance their messaging experience further.
