Tech-Sports marriage: Qualcomm invests in Man United’s jersey

Qualcomm Technologies has secured a landmark sponsorship agreement with English soccer giants Manchester United. Starting from the 2024/25 season, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon brand will become the club’s new principal shirt sponsor, replacing the current deal with TeamViewer.

The multi-year agreement, reportedly worth over $75 million annually, will see the Snapdragon logo prominently featured on the front of Manchester United’s home, away, and third kits for both the men’s and women’s teams.  This deal surpasses Manchester United’s previous record-breaking jersey sponsorship with Chevrolet, which was valued at around $80 million per year.

“We are proud to bring the power of Snapdragon together with one of the most iconic names in world sport,” said Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated. “We look forward to bringing best-in-class experiences to Manchester United fans everywhere and supporting a new era of technology integration at the club.”

The partnership extends beyond just jersey branding, as Qualcomm and Manchester United will collaborate on innovative fan experiences powered by Snapdragon’s cutting-edge technology. This includes the potential development of an augmented reality platform that allows supporters to virtually step onto the pitch at Old Trafford.

Qualcomm’s investment in Manchester United reflects a broader trend of tech companies seeking to elevate their brand visibility and consumer engagement through high-profile sports sponsorships.

“Snapdragon platforms will help enable ground-breaking experiences for fans across the globe, deepening their engagement with the football club they love,” the club’s website states

Other notable examples include Intel’s partnerships with the International Olympic Committee, NFL, NBA, and FIFA, as well as Cisco’s smart stadium technology deals with teams like the Golden State Warriors.  These collaborations allow tech firms to showcase their enterprise solutions while also tapping into the massive global fanbases of top sports properties.

The Snapdragon sponsorship also comes on the heels of Manchester United’s recent 10-year, £900 million kit supply deal renewal with Adidas, highlighting the club’s ability to secure lucrative commercial partnerships despite its on-field struggles in recent seasons.

For Qualcomm, the Manchester United deal represents a strategic investment to significantly boost awareness and affinity for its Snapdragon brand, which powers a wide range of premium consumer electronics. With over 1.1 billion fans worldwide, the partnership provides Qualcomm unparalleled global visibility.

Search results indicate that one of their customers is tech giant Apple and the company announced they would be providing 5G chips to the iPhone until 2026.
