The newly launched co-branded digital service empowers Ugandan customers to send and receive funds globally, directly through their smartphones and feature phones.

This integration of Western Union’s vast international network with PostBank Uganda’s innovative Wendi wallet creates a seamless financial ecosystem that bridges local and global economies.

Wendi, PostBank Uganda’s digital wallet, is not your average mobile money platform. It’s a comprehensive financial tool that allows users to manage and transact funds efficiently, providing a level of convenience previously unseen in the Ugandan market.

With Wendi, users can now receive money from abroad through Western Union’s extensive network, opening up new possibilities for families with relatives working overseas.

The wallet’s functionality extends beyond just receiving funds. Users can send money to bank accounts and mobile wallets worldwide, giving them the power to support family members or conduct business transactions across borders with ease. For those who prefer traditional methods, Wendi also facilitates cash pick-ups at locations abroad, ensuring that no one is left out of the financial loop.

In addition to its international capabilities, Wendi serves as a one-stop-shop for various financial needs. Users can pay bills directly from their wallet, eliminating the need for multiple apps or services. The platform also provides access to micro-financial services, potentially opening doors to credit and other financial products for those who might otherwise be excluded from traditional banking services.

For users who still value the tangibility of cash, Wendi offers the convenience of withdrawing money at Wendi kiosks scattered across Uganda. This feature bridges the gap between digital and physical currency, catering to all preferences.

Perhaps most impressively, Wendi offers users the opportunity to earn a 10% annual interest on their daily savings, a feature that sets it apart in the mobile wallet landscape. This attractive interest rate not only encourages savings but also provides a pathway for users to grow their wealth over time, contributing to long-term financial stability.

This launch is not just a local development; it’s part of a larger global strategy. Western Union’s Evolve 2025 strategy aims to double its digital business globally by focusing on product innovation and scalable market investments. Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani, Regional Vice President of Africa at Western Union, emphasized the importance of this move:

“Uganda’s fast-growing digital landscape presents an immense opportunity to enhance financial inclusion. This new service reaches banked and unbanked populations, ensuring more Ugandans can participate in the global economy.”

For PostBank Uganda, this collaboration aligns perfectly with its mission to economically transform lives through relevant financial services. Andrew Kabeera, Executive Director of PostBank Uganda, highlighted the significance of this partnership:

“With Wendi, we are empowering Ugandans, especially those who may have limited access to traditional banking services. This collaboration with Western Union furthers this by offering our customers a reliable, easy-to-use outlet for international money transfers.”

The timing of this launch couldn’t be more perfect. Uganda is experiencing a surge in digital adoption, particularly in mobile money transactions. According to recent reports from the Bank of Uganda, over 43 million customers were registered to access mobile money in 2023.

This collaboration between Western Union and Wendi is poised to support and accelerate this trend, providing an efficient and user-friendly option for money transfers.
