This guide will walk you through the process of sharing YouTube videos starting at a specific timestamp using your mobile device.

    What is a timestamp?

A timestamp refers to a specific point in time within a video, usually expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds.

For example, a timestamp of 2:30 indicates 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the video. This allows viewers to jump directly to that moment without having to watch the entire video from the beginning.

    Why share a YouTube timestamp?

Sharing a video with a timestamp allows your audience to jump directly to the content that matters most to them. This is especially useful for directing viewers to specific steps in tutorials; highlighting funny or impactful moments; as well as sharing relevant sections of a video for discussions.

How to share a YouTube video with a timestamp on mobile

Begin by launching the YouTube app on your mobile device. Make sure you are logged into your account for a seamless experience. Locate the video you want to share. You can do this by searching for it or navigating through your subscriptions or playlists.

Once the video is playing, pause it at the exact moment you want your viewers to start watching. Take note of the time displayed on the screen, as this will be crucial for sharing the timestamp.

Look for the Share button, which is typically located below the video, next to the Like and Dislike buttons. Tap on it to open the sharing options.

In the share menu, you should see an option labeled “Start at”. Toggle this option to enable it. This feature automatically generates a link that includes the timestamp of the video.

After enabling the “Start at” option, tap on Copy link. This action will copy the video link, complete with the timestamp, to your clipboard.

Now that you have the link copied, you can paste it into any messaging app, email, or social media platform. Simply long-press in the text field and select Paste to share the link with your audience.

If you prefer, you can also manually add a timestamp to the YouTube link. Here’s how to. Follow the same steps as above to copy the video link using the Share button.

At the end of the copied URL, you can add ?t= followed by the timestamp in seconds. For example, if you want to share a video starting at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, you would append ?t=150s. Alternatively, you can use the format ?t=2m30s.

Paste the modified link into your desired platform. Your viewers will be able to click on it and start watching the video from the specified timestamp.
