A new report by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) shows that Ugandans are spending less on internet data by 6%, even as the amount of data consumed per month increases. The report, which covers the period from January to March 2023, found that the average Ugandan telecom subscriber consumed 1.7 GBs of data per month, up from 1.6 GBs in December 2022. However, the total amount of money spent on data during the same period fell to 138.5 million GBs, down from 129.3 million GBs in December 2022.

UCC’s report attributes the increase in internet data consumption to the continued adoption of Internet usage by households and businesses of all sizes. It also notes that the spike in internet traffic is inconsistent with the seasonal traffic drops that usually occur following the November and December annual traffic peaks.
The report also found that internet subscriptions in Uganda grew by 1.2 million during the quarter, reaching a total of 27 million. This growth is attributed primarily to increased internet access through mobile devices.
The consistent rise in internet data subscriptions is attributed primarily to increased internet access through mobile devices. This growth in internet subscriptions has resulted in an internet penetration rate of 59 per 100 Ugandans, representing a 2% rise from the 57 per 100 Ugandans recorded in December 2022. In terms of year-on-year data comparison, there was an increase of 3.4 million active internet connections in the 12 months leading up to March 2023, representing a 14% rise in internet connections.
The decrease in data expenditure in Uganda is a positive economic development. It is leading to lower costs for businesses and consumers, and it is also helping to boost the growth of the digital economy. The future of internet data consumption in Uganda looks bright, and the country is well-positioned to take advantage of the opportunities the digital economy offers.
