Rwanda opens doors for Elon Musk’s Starlink internet

Starlink, a satellite-based internet service founded by Elon Musk, has launched its services in Rwanda. The move is aimed at improving internet connectivity in the country, particularly in remote and rural areas where traditional infrastructure is often difficult to implement.

The service was launched at the Kigali Convention Center on February 22, with a hardware package initially priced at Rwf572,000 and a monthly cost of Rwf48,000. The hardware includes a dish, router, power supply, and cable, which need to be purchased only once by the consumer.

The Rwandan government is also committed to connecting all schools with broadband internet to enhance the quality of education in the country. 500 remote schools will receive satellite internet terminals, which will provide high-speed internet access and digital learning resources for students and teachers. This is expected to improve the quality of education and increase connectivity in remote and rural areas.

The satellite broadband services of Starlink will also benefit other areas in the country, providing high-speed internet access to communities and powering innovations. Rwanda is the first country in the East African region to offer Starlink’s services, which are provided through advanced low-orbit satellites.

The service is available in over 30 countries, mainly in North America and Europe. Starlink has deployed over 2,000 satellites and plans to launch thousands more.

One of the significant advantages of Starlink’s satellite-based internet is that it offers high-speed, low-latency internet service with download speeds ranging between 100 megabits per second and 200 Mbps. This makes it an attractive option for individuals and businesses that require reliable and fast internet connectivity.

The launch of Starlink’s services in Rwanda is a positive step towards improving internet connectivity in the country. With its high-speed, low-latency internet service, it has the potential to bridge the digital divide in remote and rural areas, allowing individuals and businesses to connect and communicate more effectively. It can also help facilitate access to digital resources and online education, allowing for greater educational opportunities for all.

The launch of Starlink’s services in Rwanda is also a testament to the country’s commitment to technological innovation and development. The government of Rwanda has been actively working to develop its technology sector, with initiatives such as the Rwanda Innovation Fund and the Kigali Innovation City. By embracing new technologies and innovations, the country is positioning itself as a hub for technological advancement and growth.
