Huawei has set its sights on the future with the HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy version, currently in the developer preview phase. The tech giant seems to be paving the way for a groundbreaking software update, as evidenced by the registration of two trademarks – ‘Hongmeng Galaxy’ and ‘HarmonyOS NEXT.’
These trademarks, filed on January 18, carry the application numbers 76515544 and 76491814, respectively, signaling a significant step towards the official release of HarmonyOS NEXT.
Huawei’s move is strategic, as it aims to establish a unique identity for its self-developed operating system. Both trademarks, categorized as ‘scientific instruments,’ are presently pending fundamental review, indicating a meticulous approach to the development and protection of their intellectual property.
This move comes amidst Huawei’s recent surge in trademark applications, mainly concentrated in the automobile sector. However, the latest trademarks reveal the company’s commitment to advancing its own operating system, highlighting a shift towards innovation in software development.
As of now, HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy version is in the developer preview phase, with several firms completing core version development for native applications.
The system focuses on six key aspects: native refinement, native applications, smoothness, security, intelligence, and smart interconnectivity. This promises users an experience characterized by immersive visual effects and user-friendly features.

Beta program and official launch
Huawei has announced plans to launch the HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy developer beta program in the second quarter of this year.
The official version is slated for release by the end of 2024, building anticipation for the unveiling of this futuristic software system. The company aims to provide more details about the upcoming features and functionalities in the coming months.
The developer preview version is already open for applications, with plans to launch the developer beta program in the second quarter and a commercial version in the fourth quarter of this year.
One noteworthy aspect is the decision to make the HarmonyOS NEXT developer preview version exclusive to the Hongmeng kernel and system applications. In a bold move, Huawei is discontinuing compatibility with Android open-source applications, terming it a “pure-blooded Harmony” experience.
