Popular Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has threatened to sue telecom firm Airtel Uganda, accusing the telecom company of stealing over 17GB of his mobile data. In a letter published on the X platform and also addressed to Airtel, Bebe Cool claims that on January 16th, 2024, he purchased a 22GB data bundle for UGX 50,000. Shortly after, he alleges that his data balance inexplicably dropped to 5GB within a few hours, despite minimal usage.

Bebe Cool states that this data depletion caused him to miss an important business meeting scheduled for that night, forcing him to incur travel expenses for a physical meeting in Lagos. He accuses Airtel of unethical conduct and a breach of their prepaid agreement, demanding compensation for:
- Unused data: Refund of the remaining data balance.
- Travel expenses: UGX 100,000,000 to cover the cost of travel necessitated by the missed meeting.
- Inconvenience: UGX 100,000,000 for the disruption caused.
The letter requests Airtel to provide a detailed breakdown of his data usage within the specified timeframe and fulfill his demands within 21 days. Failure to comply, Bebe Cool warns, will result in legal action.
Airtel Uganda has not yet responded publicly to Bebe Cool’s allegations. The situation highlights concerns about data theft and transparency in mobile data usage among Ugandan customers. It remains to be seen how this issue will unfold and whether Airtel will address Bebe Cool’s claims.
