YouTube Shorts can now run up to three minutes long

YouTube is set to enhance its Shorts feature by allowing videos to run up to three minutes long, starting from October 15, 2024. This change marks a significant extension from the previous one-minute limit and is part of YouTube’s strategy to compete more effectively with TikTok, which has been offering longer video formats for some time.

YouTube Shorts was launched as a direct competitor to TikTok, focusing on short-form video content that allows creators to engage audiences quickly.

Initially, Shorts were capped at 60 seconds, which aligned with the rapid consumption habits of users on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, feedback from creators indicated a strong desire for longer videos, leading to this upcoming update.

Key features of the new update

Creators will be able to upload Shorts that last up to three minutes. This change aims to provide more flexibility in content creation and storytelling, allowing creators to delve deeper into their topics without being constrained by time limits.

YouTube is redesigning the Shorts player interface to enhance user experience. Interaction buttons will now be outlined rather than filled, allowing for better visibility of the video content itself. Additionally, the layout for displaying creator information will be more compact, although this may lead to truncated descriptions that require users to click “more” to read fully.

A new “templates” feature will enable users to easily create content based on existing popular Shorts. By selecting “Remix” on a Short they admire and choosing “Use this template,” creators can quickly adapt trends and styles without starting from scratch. This feature aims to streamline participation in viral trends.

YouTube is introducing a country-specific trends page within the Shorts section, allowing users to see what’s trending locally. This contrasts with TikTok’s global approach and could help foster a sense of community among users in specific regions.

Users will soon be able to preview comments directly from the Shorts feed, facilitating greater interaction with content and potentially increasing engagement rates.

YouTube is also implementing an option for users who wish to see fewer Shorts in their feed. This feature can be accessed via a menu option but is noted as being temporary, meaning it may not permanently alter the user’s feed preferences.

    Competitive landscape

This update is part of a broader trend where social media platforms are adapting features from one another in response to user preferences:

TikTok currently allows videos up to 10 minutes, having gradually extended its limits since its inception.

Instagram Reels caps videos at 90 seconds, making YouTube’s three-minute limit a competitive advantage for those looking for slightly longer formats without reaching TikTok’s maximum.
