Exploring The Different Chaos License Types

on

Curious about the variety of license types available for your favorite Chaos products?  Let's dive in and explore which Chaos license is best suited for your needs and workflow.

Fixed (Node-Locked) License (Commercial)

Accessibility: A fixed license binds the software to a single machine or device, limiting its use to that specific workstation.

Target Audience: Ideal for individual users or small teams who require the software on a specific computer.

Management: This license type is straightforward to manage due to its restriction to a single machine, eliminating the need for managing a pool of licenses or monitoring concurrent usage.

Cost: Fixed licenses can be purchased monthly, annually or in 3 year terms.

Products: V-Ray Solo, Enscape Fixed, Corona Solo

Educational License (EDU)

Accessibility: Offered at a reduced rate for students, and free for educators. Educational licenses are intended strictly for educational purposes and may come with certain usage restrictions.

Target Audience: Students, educators, and academic institutions benefit the most from this type of license, enabling learning and teaching at a minimal cost.

Management: For students, educators, and universities, V-Ray Education licenses are floating and can be used on multiple devices.

Cost: These licenses are offered at a discounted rate to promote the use of professional software in academic settings.  Educators can contact sales@vray.us to see how they can apply for a free license.

Products: V-Ray Education - Student, V-Ray Education University Lab, Enscape Educational, Corona Educational

Free Trial License

Accessibility: A free trial license allows temporary access to the full features of software for a limited time period to evaluate its capabilities.  Only one trial can be issued per customer who has not had a V-Ray license prior.

Target Audience: New potential users looking to test the software on their device before committing to a purchase are the primary users of trial licenses.

Management: Free trials are generally tied to an individual user or machine and include measures to prevent the reactivation of trial periods.

Cost: Trial licenses are free for the duration of the trial, after which the user must purchase the software to continue using it.

Products: V-Ray Trial (30 Days), Enscape Trial (14 Days)

Floating License (Commercial)

Accessibility: Floating licenses are shared among a group of users. Depending on the software, this can be via a network or installed locally on each machine. The number of concurrent users can not exceed the total number of purchased licenses.

Target Audience: Businesses and organizations with flexible software access needs across multiple workstations, but not necessarily simultaneously, will find floating licenses especially beneficial.

Management: Managing floating licenses may require a license server to distribute access among users and to track the number of concurrent users accurately.

Cost: While the initial setup might be more complex, floating licenses are cost-effective for organizations, maximizing each license's utilization and offering flexible access for multiple users.

Perpetual License (Commercial)

Accessibility: Grants indefinite software access from the time of purchase, without the need for subscription renewals.

Target Audience: Suitable for users or organizations preferring a one-time investment for ongoing access, without concern for the latest updates or support which are made available for an additional cost as they are released.

Management: Once purchased, the software can be used indefinitely, though updates or support may require additional fees or subscriptions.

Cost: Initially more expensive but potentially more cost-effective over time, especially for stable software needs without frequent upgrades.
